Correct Rod Length and Shoe Configuration for Your Sash Assembly
Non-tilt balance rods operate vertically within the window frame channels, supporting sash weight and controlling descent speed. The plastic shoe attaches to the sash stile and slides along the rod. Proper rod length—measured from frame pocket to sash attachment point—is critical for smooth operation and correct balance force application. Undersized or oversized rods will not engage properly or will cause binding.
Identify Your Exact Rod Type by Sash Pocket Depth
Measure from the bottom of the upper sash pocket to the balance rod attachment hole on your sash stile. Standard rods fit pockets up to approximately 6.5 inches; extended rods accommodate deeper pockets. The plastic shoe slides on the rod and must move freely without resistance. Verify your current shoe condition—worn or cracked shoes require replacement to prevent rod slip.
Plastic Shoe Fit and Channel Clearance Specifications
The plastic shoe diameter must match the rod gauge—3/8" rods require shoes bored for 3/8" diameter. Check for dirt, paint, or corrosion in frame channels before installation; these prevent smooth shoe travel. Ensure channels are parallel and straight. A slightly loose shoe indicates normal wear; excessive play means the shoe is oversized or the rod is undersized.
